Originating in Denmark in the 1930s, the Thuja Green Giant arborvitae is a remarkable hybrid evergreen that merges versatility with visual attractiveness. This species, which is part of the genus Thuja, results from a hybrid cross between the (Thuja plicata) Western Redcedar and the (Thuja standishii) Japanese arborvitae. Its consistent vibrancy throughout the year and vigorous growth over time have established the Thuja Green Giant as America's choice for both landscapers and homeowners.
Planting: Choose a location with well-drained soil. Space trees appropriately based on your desired outcome (closer for a dense hedge, further apart for individual specimens or a less dense screen). For a tight hedge, planting 5 feet apart is often recommended. For more space and continued privacy, 8-10 feet apart is suitable.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment period (the first year or two) and during dry spells. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.
Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the trees to help retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.
