PEAR MOONGLOW
Moonglow Pear This excellent pear has medium-sized, brownish-green fruit, with a soft,
white, juicy flesh. It is a vigorous, globe-shaped, upright tree with very good tolerance
to fire blight. Fruit matures one week before Bartlett. Requires a pollinator.

This hardy deciduous pear is of great value for its resistance to fire blight, a sometimes
fatal bacterial disease to which many pears are susceptible. Vigorous, upright, and glossy-
leaved, it covers itself with clusters of creamy-white flowers in spring. These are
attractive to bees and other insect pollinators.

This early pear ripens in late summer — even before ‘Bartlett’ pears. The large fruits have
yellow-green skin with a red blush, and the flesh is white, free of gritty cells, and juicy.
Like other domestic pears, ‘Moonglow’ must be picked when the fruits are hard and their
stems break off the branches easily under gentle pressure. The fruits harvested this way
ripen in ten days at room temperature. They are good fresh, baked, frozen, or in
preserves.

For good growth and yields, plant ‘Moonglow’ in average, well-drained soil in full sun. The
tree prefers sandy or clay loam, but is adaptable to a wide range of soils and soil
conditions. For gardeners with small yards or limited space, ‘Moonglow’ is available
grafted onto rootstocks that limit growth. The small trees are highly ornamental when in
bloom and can be placed in mixed borders or trained as espaliers. This cultivar sets more
fruit if others are nearby for cross-pollination.

Shape the tree by pruning to let sunlight reach all the leaves. This helps limit leaf diseases
and gives the tree enough energy to produce well year after year. Because ‘Moonglow’
flowers profusely, thin the fruits to one or two per cluster while they are thumb-sized or
smaller.
