Most vegetation melds into a sea of green foliage. A rare few trees engage
our eyes. Such is the case of Deodar Cedar. This is one of the four
“True Cedars” and is the most extensively used of the genus in landscape
design.
Mystic Ice was introduced in England in 1830’s and probably arrived in the US
by the 1850’s. It was during this new plant frenzy that occurred that we can
also trace the introductions of such trees as China Fir and Cryptomeria into
our landscapes.
Like most conifers it requires excellent drainage to prosper. In a fertile soil it
will be fast growing while young, often making two feet of growth annually. Did
I mention heat? This tree should be considered as an urban tolerant, heat
island favorite. Remember that the landscapes in Afghanistan and Pakistan

are no walk in the park. The secret is in the planting. Deodar Cedars like highand dry. If drainage is an
issue, I recommend that installers berm the trees two to three inches above grade. This improves the
drainage potential in clay soil structures.
