Thuja Gardens - Plum trees for the backyard
POLLINATION
Some plum tress are self-fertile, but many require a compatible plum tree nearby (plum trees are not so
common as apple trees) for pollination to occur. Plum trees have a short and very distinct pollination period of
only 10 days
The most popular plum in America today is the Santa Rosa plum. It accounts for nearly 1/3 of the
total plum crop.
An important consideration in selecting plum cultivars for planting is that of pollination requirement.
Generally speaking, Japanese plums need to be pollinated by Japanese plums and European
plums need European pollinating partners. This is due to the fact that the Japanese plums
bloom very early and are almost always finished well before the European plums start to bloom.
So the pollen from one type is simply not available at the right time to pollinate the other type.
To keep this from being a problem for homeowners, all our plum trees are self-fertile types.
