Long known in Australia under the name 'Hiryu' this
splendid camellia of the C. hiemalis species has since proved
to be the original Japanese cultivar 'Kanijiro/ Growing
vigorously to a tall bushy shape, it makes an excellent
garden subject,
whether as a specimen tree or hedge.
The foliage is dark and glossy and the flowers are large for
the species. Single to semi-double and colored a deep cerise,
they are shaded paler at the center and base of the petals.
This gives the appearance of the central stripe.
